AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND AND REENACT SECTIONS 4-1001,
Department created; classification; number of members

BE IT ORDAINED by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Jeanerette, in regular session assembled,

That the Code of Ordinance of the City of Jeanerette, SECTION 4-1001 is hereby AMENDED and REENACTED to read as follows, to wit:

WHEREAS, SECTION 1-116 requires in the event of a vacancy for the office of Chief of Police members of the board of Aldermen must appoint a replacement Chief within 10 days.

WHEREAS, SECTION 1-116 does not allow the board of Aldermen to appoint an interim Chief to allow time to advertise and locate a new Chief.

BE IT THEREFORE ORDAINED, by the Board of Aldermen, City of Jeanerette, State of Louisiana, that items c & d be added and the ordinance now read

(c) An interim chief of police shall be appointed by the board of alderman if the chief of police resigns or is removed from office for any reason.
(d). The term of the interim chief of police shall be no longer than 120 calendar days. At the end of 120 calendar days, the interim chief of police may be re-appointed for another 120 calendar days by the board of alderman and continue until a chief of police is appointed by the board.

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED, that all ordinances and resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.

This Ordinance shall take effect on April 25, 2025.

This Ordinance was introduced on the10th day of March 2025, by Alderman Bourgeois notice of public hearing having been posted on March 14th 2025, said public hearing having been held on April 14, 2025, the title having been read and the ordinance considered, on motion of Alderman Bourgeois, whom moved its adoption, seconded by Alderman Duplechain, and upon roll call was adopted by its title, section by section, and as a whole, by the following yea and nay vote:

Yeas: Alderwoman Moore, Alderman Bourgeois, Alderwoman Simmons,
Alderman Duplechain
Nay: None
Absent: Alderwoman Clay
Abstain: None

This Ordinance was thereupon declared adopted by Mayor and was approved and signed by him and attested by the City Clerk and the corporate seal of the City of Jeanerette affixed hereto on this 15th day of April, 2025.
