Minutes from the Tuesday October 8, 2024 City of Jeanerette Public Works and Safety Committee Meeting
Present- Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr., Alderman Ray Duplechain, City Clerk Susan Colden, Chief Dusty Vallot, Chief Sherry Landry, Elizabeth Moore and Lawanda Robertson from Public and Anderson Clay, Brandon and Scott Landry from Statewide Electric. Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr. called the meeting to order and led the prayer. Chief Landry reported for the month of September they had 71 call outs 64 in the City and 7 auto aid. In the City there were 32 medical with 23 cancelled, 3 alarm investigations 1 gas leak, 1 trash fire, and 1 structure fire on 3rd Street. On August 29 & 30 they participated in Hazmat training. Also, on August 29 the extrication tools received annual maintenance. On September 5 the left side bay was put back into service. The door framing and door job completed. On September 9 Chief Landry promoted 2 members of the department Tyus Gage was promoted to Captain and Ronald Polidore was promoted to Lieutenant. On September 10 the station was manned for hurricane preparedness at 8 pm and Chief Landry released personnel on September 11 at 10 pm. On 9/17 the department attended Iberia Parish Training Center for training. On September 18th they attended a Zoom training hosted by Louisiana State Fireman’s Assoc. On September 23 the new generator for the central station. On September 25 they conducted a fire drill at St. Charles Elementary and received delivery of 10 new hydrants. On September 30 they conducted a monthly fire drill at the senior high. Chief Landry also discussed the increase for the fire millage that will be on the March ballot as proposed by Iberia Parish Fire Chief Guy Bonin that will better serve the whole Parish. Next Chief Vallot reported 173 total calls for the month 19 arrests and 8 citations. The Department added two new full-time employees and one part-time. One officer Shanee, got certified in Intox 9000 so the Department now has an officer certified to work DWI and driving under suspension and they are working with the State to get a machine instead of going to the sheriff’s office. With the new staffing the department has four post level 1 certified officers with a total of 5 full-time and two part-time officers. Alderman Bourgeois asked what can be done with the noise around the clubs, and Vallot explained that the noise is coming from the large amount of people in the cars around the club. After discussion Aldermen Duplechain and Bourgeois wanted to introduce a change to the Ordinance for the October 14 meeting to change the closing time so it will be midnite every night. Next Elizabeth Moore reported work on 3 allies, marked 2 Dotties, cut the ditch on MLK and removed trash. Ten ditches were cut with the side boom tractor and 2 pot holes were filled. Grass was cut in 21 locations and a tree that fell in the road at Trappe and Main was removed. Road kill was removed and a sewer line was located, 5 sewer backups were cleared and 5 water leaks were repaired. The Mayor stated that an electrician will be looking at the wiring at the Pavilion ahead of the French Bread Festival. The Mayor also addressed some plans to possibly look at using part of the blighted property funds to clear a property in each ward and to clear tires that are building up. There were also questions about the cane trucks affecting drainage. Brandon from Statewide reported that Frisco delivered a pot perm pump and the manual, that was their final item. Lemoine came and changed the flow controls and the softeners were put back online. The wall of the confinement tank was painted as well as the lines in the parking lot. Anderson addressed the new regulations concerning the containment wall around the brine tank. Anderson also addressed how they are addressing the hardness, and also about the insertion valve. A new motor was installed at King Joseph and a starter motor at St Paul Lane, there are two pumps mostly working at each station. There was some discussion regarding the aerators at the sewer plant. The Mayor updated the conference he attended through LMA. He also added that on October 28 there will be a meeting with the Office of Community Development concerning the Love Louisiana Playground Project. There was discussion of the sewer relocation and the homecoming and Halloween and French Bread Festival. With no other business to consider the meeting was adjourned.
